Google recently announced a Core Algorithm Update.
While the algorithm is updating on a regular basis (sometimes multiple times a day), a core algorithm update tends to be more noticeable, and is announced by Google when changes are made that are large enough to be reflected in search engine results pages across most sectors.
Rollout of the updates will take up to two weeks.
The update is expected to negatively impact the ranking of websites featuring content that has little or no use to visitors. Often content has been added to a website in an attempt to fool Google bots into listing the site for specified search terms. Website content should be developed with a positive user experience in mind, rather than unnaturally including search terms, in an attempt to improve search rankings. This outdated approach is no longer effective.
The Helpful Content Update (HCU) is part of the Core Algorithm Update, and is continually running, so all websites could be affected by the HCU algorithm component.
If your website or blog has thin content, or content that shows a higher bounce rate than your sites’ average, it may be worth monitoring your rankings for the next few weeks. If you notice issues, you can perform an audit to remove content that could be having a negative effect on your rankings.
Effective. long term SEO strategies should be content centred, with clients (or agencies on their behalf) creating and publishing useful, relevant content on a regular basis.
